About HighDef
History

Michael and Shane Carn have been implementing new technologies in the audio visual industry for over fourty years. They were one of the first in Australia to use video to film technologies in 1993 and have continued to push the possibilities of emerging technologies ever since.

Around 2005 they saw that high quality digital image aquisition was maturing to a stage that it would be an increasingly viable option for film and television over the coming years, but also, that these technologies were fragmenting into an often confusing array of possibilities. There was a need for a company that would provide clear solutions for productions. They founded HighDef to research and develop the best of the new technologies and apply them into solid workflow pipelines.

We were the first to offer a service to record uncompressed HD to hard disk in Sydney and one of the first to place an order for the Red One Camera in Australia.

Digital Cinema

There have been many disappointments for digital cinema over the past ten years. For all the claims of HD as the replacement of film, it has not lived up to the promise. There are many reasons for this; varying frame sizes, compression codecs, depth of field issues and workflow compromises have given Digital acquisition a bad rap.

But with the advent of cine style cameras such as the Red One - Digital Cinema's time has arrived. We have a comparable alternative to film in quality, but also, an alternative that offers many more advantages in workflow, speed and cost.

In digital cinema, the traditional relationship with the lab no longer exists; there is no film to process. The footage is now 'data' and the management is an IT based operation. If carried out correctly, it offers less risk to footage than the film workflow.

HighDef has been developing and tailoring its service to fill the gap in traditional 35mm workflow since 2006. We offer a similar service to a lab, except it starts on set with the camera. We fit into your production at whatever level you desire to get the best possible outcome for your production.

We bring enthusiasm and a little bit of obsession to your production – Every pixel matters.

Studio

With the advance of desktop editing and compositing solutions HighDef has introduced a matching sized green screen service. The idea is to provide a walk-in/walk out green screen facility.

Commercials and web presentations can take advantage of green screen technology without hiring a large studio, of which 80% they didn't need, thus lowering the costs of these productions considerably.

In combination with the studio, HighDef offers an uncompressed HD recording path that will give you the best HD key available anywhere.

By combining these emerging technologies together HighDef is able to offer the best at a cost effective rate.
